Malaysia welcomed a record 10.6 million international visitors in the first quarter of 2026, marking its strongest start to the year for tourism
According to Malay Mail, in a statement today, 13 May, Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the country received 10,647,200 international arrivals between January and March, a 5.4% increase compared to the same period last year.

The figure surpassed the previous first-quarter record of 10,102,972 arrivals in 2025 by roughly half a million visitors.

Tiong noted that even before the COVID-19 pandemic, Malaysia had never crossed the 10 million mark in the first three months of the year.

Key markets included Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei, and the Philippines.

The growth was also supported by stronger air links, with 20 new scheduled international routes launched during the quarter. Tiong said 12 airlines added a total of 95 international flights per week into Malaysia, including new routes connecting more cities in China.

Malaysia also crossed another milestone when visitor arrivals from Europe exceeded 500,000 in the first quarter for the first time
Tiong said the ministry has been actively targeting European travellers as part of efforts to boost tourism receipts, as visitors from the region generally stay longer and spend more during their trips.

Of the 16 key European markets monitored by the ministry, 15 recorded growth in arrivals. Among the strongest-performing markets were Türkiye, which saw arrivals surge 77.3%, followed by Ukraine at 35.3% and Poland at 23.7%.

The top 10 countries visiting Malaysia in Q1 2026 are as follows:
Singapore
China
Indonesia
Thailand
Brunei
India
South Korea
Philippines
Australia
United Kingdom

Despite the strong performance, Tiong acknowledged that geopolitical tensions in the Middle East began affecting travel patterns towards the end of March
He said disruptions to fuel supply and changes to flight routes increased airline operating costs, contributing to higher ticket prices and some flight cancellations.

Still, he described Malaysia's overall first-quarter performance as encouraging.

He said the ministry would continue strengthening partnerships with international tourism and aviation players in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026.

Malaysia's Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Tiong King Sing, said he has received many complaints from foreign and domestic tourists about the rudeness behaviours they faced in enquiries.

He said that some tourism officers believe they wield power and do not bother to explain the issues that tourists may not understand, reported The Star.

"But these officers tried to show their power... (some even said) 'Do you know who I am?'"

Tiong was speaking at the launch of the Mesra Malaysia Campaign at KL Sentral on Feb. 11.

Mesra means friendly or harmonious in Malay.

Image at stake
Tiong said that public and private sector employees had to change their attitude if the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) initiative was to succeed.

"Don’t let people think that this is not a friendly country."

He said that Malaysians from rural areas were also looked down upon by some government officers and retail employees.

He added that he would speak to the shopping mall management about the bias after Chinese New Year.

"I don’t want tourists to tell me that when they buy something, it's as though they have owed the retail staff money for 10 years.

Mesra Malaysia
The Mesra Malaysia launch highlights practical service delivery for frontline workers in industries such as transport, hospitality, aviation and tourism sectors.

Plaques were also given to strategic partners who advanced Malaysia's hospitality plans.

The Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry released a statement which said, "what is most significant is the Malaysian people, known for being friendly, courteous and always ready to help".

According to The Star, Malaysia recorded 42.2 million visitors in 2025.

Some public and private sector employees need a change of attitude if Visit  2026 (VM2026) is to succeed, according to Tiong King Sing.

The tourism, arts and culture minister said he has received numerous complaints from both foreign and domestic tourists about the rudeness they faced when making inquiries.

“Some officers think they have a lot of power. But when people don’t understand certain issues, we must explain,” Tiong said when launching the Mesra Malaysia campaign in KL Sentral on Wednesday.

“But these officers tried to show their power … [some even said] ‘Do you know who I am?’ Let’s look at this issue seriously.”

Aside from foreign tourists, Tiong also said even Malaysians from rural areas were looked down upon by some government officers and retail outlet employees.

“When they asked questions, they were not answered nicely,” he said, adding that he will speak to shopping centre management about this after Lunar New Year.

Wednesday, 11 Feb 2026 1:10 PM MYT
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 11 — Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing today called on tourism frontline workers to adopt the level of courtesy and friendliness practised in Japan, saying such behaviour is crucial in shaping visitors’ impressions of Malaysia ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026.

Speaking after the launch of the Mesra Malaysia Campaign, Tiong said Malaysia must be seen as a genuinely welcoming country, not only through policies but through daily interactions between locals and tourists.

“We are asking all Malaysians, especially, to help safeguard the country’s image and take care of our nation. We should not appear to be an unfriendly country. We must prove otherwise.

“For example, look at Japan, when we arrive and ask something, they bow and say ‘thank you’. All of this depends on each individual. So we must all participate,” he told reporters at the ERL Arrival Zone in KL Sentral, here.

He said unfriendly behaviour by frontline workers — including at train stations and on the KL hop-on hop-off buses — risks undermining Malaysia’s tourism image.

He cited feedback from tourists who said they were scolded when asking for directions, including being told not to use public transport if they did not understand.

“At the train station, people were not friendly. They came to Malaysia as tourists.

“The hop-on hop-off buses were the same. When they asked the driver how to get somewhere, the drivers got angry. They said if you do not know or do not understand, then do not ride. But where do you expect them to go and how, walk?” he asked.

Tiong also urged shopping centre operators and retail staff to play their role in creating a positive experience for visitors.

“Do not be like what some tourists say when they enter a shop to buy something, it feels as though they have owed the shop money for 10 years,” he said.

Tiong said improving attitudes among frontline personnel remains a key focus of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac).

As of January 2026, he said 9,498 tourist guides are registered with the ministry.

In 2024, Motac organised 50 training courses involving 1,344 participants, while in 2025, 107 training sessions were conducted with the participation of 3,588 participants.

Overall, 158 courses were carried out between 2024 and 2025, reaching 4,930 frontline workers.

However, he said the number was still insufficient.

“It is not that we think 5,000 people are enough. In reality, it is not enough. So all Malaysians must do their part,” he said.

To strengthen service standards, Tiong said Motac has introduced the Kursus Mesra Malaysia, a training module developed to replace the We Are The Host programme that has been in use since 2014.

The course is designed to provide comprehensive training for frontline personnel who are directly or indirectly involved in the tourism industry and is a mandatory pre-requisite for tour guides before they can be licensed by Motac.

Among its objectives are to familiarise tourism players with the latest direction of Malaysia’s tourism industry, enhance customer service skills, improve communication techniques, and raise awareness of current tourism products.
